The city of Anchorage is one of those magical places that really defines Alaska. Perched along the shores of Cook Inlet and with commanding views of the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is a small that city that is big on adventure.

Although Anchorage is a small city with only 270,000 year-round residents, it does offer all the trappings of any mid-size city in the lower 48. Gone are the massive hotels found in some cities and in are small to mid-sized, locally owned hotels that offer not only a comfortable place to lay tour head, but ambiance that can only be found here in Alaska. Familiar names like Marriott, Days Inn and Super 8 all call Anchorage home, as does the Hotel Captian Cook, the Voyager hotel and a few local bed and breakfast options rounding out the bunch.Dining and walking around AnchorageDining and walking around Anchorage is something that you must do if you are here for any length of time. Most are suprised by the mix of restaurants here, and thankfully so. With Humpy's Great Alaskan Ale House, Orso (Italian), Sullivan's Steakhouse, Simon and Seaforts Saloon & Grill, the Sourdough Mining Company and Sack's Cafe all close to your hotels, your destined for a great meal and a great time dining here in Anchorage. Once you have indulged yourself with some of Anchorage's best food, it's time to take a stroll. Anchorage is based on a grid system, so getting lost here or straying too far from the hotels is for all practical purposes impossible. (Locals tip - The numbered streets run north/south and the east/west streets are alphabetical.) Additionally, there are some pretty great sights to see while on your post-meal walk. Earthquake park, Ship Creek (with it's Salmon runs) and the 10-mile Tony Knowles Coastal Trail make this not only a fun and educational city to be walking around in, but a picturesque one too!
